SCHOOL INFORMATION

The W. Clair Harris Apparel and Textile Center of Excellence has been created to provide students with access to state-of-the-art technologies, showcase the industry’s best ideas, and provide needed research for apparel and textile-related industries.

The Center was made possible through the unprecedented cooperation of the public and private sectors. The Georgia Governor’s Research Consortium provided $1.6 million for the physical plant. Apparel and textile companies donated over $1 million in equipment to five of the Center’s six laboratories. And the late, Mrs. Reunette Woodruff Harris, widow of apparel industry pioneer W. Clair Harris, made a major donation for equipment.

The W. Clair Harris Apparel and Textile Center of Excellence is a 25,000 square-foot building including classrooms, laboratories, a 100-seat lecture hall, a student personal computer lab, and office space for the college’s apparel/textile engineering technology programs. Warren Epstein and Associates, Architects, Inc., of Atlanta designed the facility with a striking roofline, textured brickwork, and interesting curves and angles. The public and private spaces of the building are organized along an omission two-story 300 foot-long spine.

The Center, however, is much more than a building. It is a facility that provides the competitive edge that American apparel/textile manufacturers need in a global economy. Apparel and textile engineering technology students learn the use of computers and robotics in design, manufacturing, and quality control. They participate in labs, demonstrations, and special projects. After graduation, these students accept positions in engineering production, quality control, or management – transferring these skills into the new technology from the classroom to industry.
